From receiving support for his Master’s degree from Jusoor at the University of Exeter to an offer to pursue a PhD at the university, Yousef’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a deep sense of responsibility.
Born in Syria and of Kurdish origin, he was forced to leave his homeland in 2014 at the age of 14 due to the war. “It was a scary and uncertain time,” he recalls. “I didn’t know where I was going or what the future held.” After two years out of school, Yousef’s life took a transformative turn when he was awarded a scholarship to pursue his undergraduate studies in Türkiye.
For Yousef, education became more than just a personal achievement—it was a privilege that came with a sense of duty. “I realized how many other refugees didn’t have the same opportunities I did,” he says. “That’s when I felt a responsibility to give back to my community.”
During his time in Turkey, Yousef began volunteering with organizations focused on aid distribution and education. He quickly recognized the need for more structured educational support, particularly for displaced youth. This realization led him to initiate online courses and workshops, reaching over 150 engineering students during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Seeing the impact of my work was incredibly fulfilling,” he shares. “It showed me that even small efforts can make a big difference.”

Yousef’s passion for engineering has been a driving force throughout his journey. From his undergraduate studies in electronics to his master’s in engineering business management, he has always been drawn to the tangible outcomes of his work. “I love that in engineering, you can see the physical results of your efforts—whether it’s building robots, 3D printing, or creating innovative solutions,” he explains.
Following successfully graduating from his Master’s program, Yousef is now pursuing a PhD in the UK, researching 3D printing for construction, with a focus on making housing more accessible and sustainable. “I hope my research can contribute to rebuilding efforts in places like Syria,” he says. “It’s about creating solutions that can have a real-world impact.”
For Yousef, his academic achievements are not just personal milestones but steps toward a larger goal. “I feel a deep responsibility to use my education to uplift others,” he emphasizes. “Organizations like Jusoor have supported me because they believe in my ability to give back. That’s a responsibility I take seriously.”
As he celebrates his graduation, Yousef reflects on his journey with gratitude and determination. “I miss Syria, but what’s more important is making it better for the next generation,” he says. “By doing my research and contributing to my community, I’m playing my part in building a brighter future.”
Yousef’s story is a testament to the power of education, resilience, and the unwavering belief in the potential to create change. Through his work and dedication, he is not only shaping his future but also paving the way for others to thrive.
