Registration in Syria; Back-to-School; a PhD

Jusoor’s October 2025 Newsletter
Registration in Syria; Back-to-School; a PhD

This October, we welcomed our students back to our centers after the summer holidays; congratulated our alumna Sarah Khalil on completing her PhD; shared best practices through workshops hosted by other organizations; and, most importantly, we are finally registered as an NGO inside Syria.

Jusoor is now a registered NGO in Syria

We’re excited to share that, in addition to our registrations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Lebanon, and Jordan, Jusoor is now officially registered as a non-governmental organization in our home country, Syria! This milestone in our Bridges to Syria Initiative opens up doors and huge potential for impact. It means being able to legally operate fully on the ground, which opens the door for local and international partnerships.

We were absolutely thrilled to welcome our students back to Jusoor's learning centers across Lebanon at the start of October. Before the school year started, our teaching team gathered in Jeb Jennine for a productive four-day professional development retreat.

The training included a session on "Practical Differentiated Activities" facilitated by our Psycho-Social Counselor, Houda Abou Nouh, and a two-day workshop, “Learning is Everywhere: Reflective English Teaching for Refugee Classrooms,” led by Diana Dib and Jessy Matta. A major highlight of the retreat was a comprehensive training session by War Child UK, which provided a deep familiarity with their essential programs and online learning tool. We can’t wait for what will hopefully be an inspiring year for our students across all three learning centers.

Sharing Best Practices with our Peers

Our Head of Refugee Education, Suha Tutunji, was busy this month with two online workshops sharing our best practices and her expertise on working with marginalized and vulnerable children and youth. In her first workshop with Manar Foundation, Suha shared Jusoor’s inspiring story with tangible impact results across its four programs. As part of the Queen Rania Academy 2025 Forum, Suha ran a workshop on Jusoor’s Identity program and how we cultivate our refugee students’ connection to their Syrian roots while they study at our centers in Lebanon.

Congratulations to our Alumna Sarah Khalil on Successfully Defending her PhD Thesis

We couldn’t be prouder of our alumna, Dr. Sarah Khalil, who was awarded a PhD in Civil Engineering after successfully defending her thesis at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada. A 100 Syrian Women, 10,000 Syrian Lives scholarship recipient, Sarah Khalil studied for her Master's degree as a Jusoor scholar and continued with a PhD scholarship awarded by her university. Sarah received several prestigious awards, including the Chancellor’s Graduate Award, Memorial University’s Highest Leadership Recognition, the Fry Family Foundation Graduate Leadership Award, the Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies Award for Academic Excellence, and the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.

Sarah expressed heartfelt gratitude to Jusoor and donors for the support, mentorship, and opportunities provided throughout her journey, and looks forward to giving back by supporting future scholars and pursuing a career in research and development. Sarah also worked for Jusoor as our Scholars and Alumni Engagement Coordinator for almost two years, serving Jusoor's community and creating a multiplier effect.
