Jusoor 2024 Annual Report

Diving into the highlights of 2024, our programs and the impact they left on thousands of vulnerable children and youth. Sharing with you stories of the ones we work for and crunching down the numbers, and finances.

A Message from our Board of Directors & Executive Director

Dear Friends and Supporters,

2024 was a year unlike any other in Jusoor’s journey. It was a year of deep, continuous impact, recognitions, and perhaps most significantly, a historic turning point. As the year drew to a close, the long-standing regime in Syria fell, a moment that, for many of us, once felt unimaginable. And while the road ahead will be long, that moment sparked a shift, a collective breath of possibility, and a sense that the future is within reach and could finally begin.

Throughout the year, your support helped us adapt and advance. From receiving the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice and becoming an MIT Solver to transitioning our education programs online during conflict in Lebanon, we showed that impact can, and must, continue even amid disruption. We launched bold new projects like the Aya Project to connect refugee youth with global careers, and celebrated 10 years of entrepreneurship by investing in startups and women-led ventures shaping the region’s economy.

And just by the time the year is ending, a shift took place that had us excited about the year to come. As Syria’s chapter began to turn, we launched Bridges to Syria, our most ambitious vision yet to build education and opportunity inside Syria. We believe this is the moment that we have been waiting for to bring our expertise and impact to finally reach those most in need and to help shape the country’s future. Everything we’ve done over the past 14 years has brought us to this threshold.

Thank you for walking beside us. The work ahead will be demanding, but it is also full of promise. Together, we are not just imagining a brighter future for Syria, we are building it.

With hope and determination,

The Jusoor Team & Board

We have reached over 19,566 vulnerable children and youth.

Over the last 14 years, Jusoor has been bridging the opportunity gap for war and displacement-affected children at each developmental stage through to their early careers. Through our 4 programs – Refugee Education, Scholarships, Entrepreneurship, and Career Development — we have impacted the lives of children and youth through creating diverse and meaningful educational pathways in the Middle East, US, UK, Europe, and Asia; trained entrepreneurs; and empowered businesses and startups through mobilizing over 27 million USD in global support.

Jusoor is one of the MIT Solve Winners and won the GSR Foundation Prize.

We were thrilled to be selected as MIT Solvers. Along with our partners, Silicon Valley-based EdTech company Lirvana Labs, Yeti Confetti for Refugees, a platform bringing AI learning to our Refugee Education Centers in Lebanon, is one of six selected Solver teams in MIT Solve’s Global Learning Challenge! Not only that, at the MIT Solve 2024 Launch Event in September, we were also awarded the GSR Foundation Prize, which recognizes solutions that innovatively use technology to address pressing issues in their communities. The AI Learning Project will be implemented in 2025.

Jusoor Received the Mother Teresa 2024 Award

With great pleasure, we received the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice under the theme “Humanity in Action” from The Harmony Foundation. This award, presented in Mumbai, India, recognizes Jusoor’s commitment to empowering children and youth in the region through education. We are honored to join the list of notable recipients of the award, including Nobel Laureates, global organizations, and exceptional individuals such as H.H Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, H.H. The Dalai Lama, Ms. Narges Mohammadi, the International Committee of the Red Cross, UNHCR, SPARK, and the Danish Refugee Council, to name a few.

Adapting to War in Lebanon, Online Learning Emerged

As students around Lebanon were getting ready to start their academic year in September, the escalation of the war waged by Israel on Lebanon had reached multiple areas in Lebanon, including Bekaa and Bourj Hammoud, where our Refugee Education Centers are located. Prompted to close our doors for the safety of our community, we quickly rallied our teachers to find ways to continue delivering education to our young learners. We adapted our online WhatsApp-based learning, Azima program, to reach hundreds of children.‍ Delivering lessons in math, English, Arabic, and life skills, we managed to keep the children learning and engaged throughout the war, despite not being in school. Not only that, we also adapted our Future Skills Project to take place online. The 75 enrolled students aged 14-17 were engaged in sessions on coding, robotics, critical thinking, and English to equip them with 21st-century skills.

Refugee Education Program

Where childhood was once interrupted,
a pencil writes the promise of a new beginning.

Refugee Education Program

Providing Quality Education for Syrian Refugees and Vulnerable Lebanese Children

Since June 2013, Jusoor’s Refugee Education Program in Lebanon has helped thousands of displaced Syrian children continue their education outside of Syria. The program seeks to ensure Syrian refugee children, as well as other vulnerable Lebanese children, have a holistic, well-rounded primary school education and a strong psychosocial support system. Our education programs have been developed in response to distinct challenges that children face due to the impact of the conflict in Syria and Lebanon's economic collapse.

Driven by the dire need for education among displaced children, with a staggering 30% of school-aged Syrian children in Lebanon having never attended school, our Refugee Education Program targets Syrian refugees in Lebanon along with their peers from vulnerable Lebanese communities. Our program emphasizes equality, with 51.19% of our students being female.

Holistic Wellbeing Focus

Our commitment to education includes a strong focus on the physical and mental well-being of our students. By incorporating psychosocial support into our curriculum, we address the holistic needs of our students, fostering an environment where they can thrive.

Advanced Learning Integration

We go beyond the basics by integrating advanced learning methods and technologies, such as real-life tools, future skills, and AI, to provide a rich and personalized educational experience. This approach ensures that each student receives the support they need to succeed academically and personally.

Cultural Sensitivity and Relevance

Our curriculum is designed to be culturally sensitive and relevant to the realities faced by our students. By tailoring our educational content to reflect their lived experiences, we make learning more relatable and impactful.

Career Development Program

A new skill learned becomes a door opened. Each step taken brings tomorrow closer

Career Development Program

Learning to work is learning to dream bigger

In response to the proliferation of upskilling initiatives in the region, where clear evidence of positive youth employment outcomes is often lacking, our Career Development Program adopts a distinctive approach. We strive to bridge the opportunity gap by directly linking Syrian talent with income-generating opportunities, refining targeted skill sets, and establishing innovative employment pathways. Our program is centered around two primary objectives: (1) connecting talented Syrian youth with existing high-quality opportunities and (2) innovating to create new job prospects. All initiatives incorporate soft skills training to empower Syrian youth with the specific tools, skills, and knowledge needed to successfully launch and advance their careers.

Comprehensive Career Support

We provide more than just job placements. Our program supports participants through every stage of their career journey, offering training modules, mentorship, and continuous follow-up to ensure long-term career progression and success.

Equitable Opportunities

We are dedicated to creating equitable opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including refugees and host community members. Our projects are designed to be inclusive and accessible, with measures such as flexible training schedules, online training support, language support, and remote work opportunities to promote social mobility and economic inclusion.

Private Sector Partnerships

By partnering with the private sector, we bridge the gap between job seekers and employers. These partnerships enable us to offer real employment opportunities and ensure that our participants are well-prepared for the job market, while also providing employers with skilled, ready-to-work employees.
