Jusoor and Lirvana Labs are MIT Solvers

This September, we have amazing news to share! We’ve also been busy preparing for our young learners at our refugee education centers to return to the new academic year, as well as welcoming our university scholars. We’re also wrapping up the incubator phase of our Disruptors project and getting ready for the next phase.

We are Solvers!

We are thrilled to announce that we have been selected, along with our partners Lirvana Labs, as Solvers in MIT Solve’s Global Learning Challenge! MIT Solve sought out cutting-edge technology-based solutions that address equity gaps in learning, and our project, Yeti Confetti for Refugees, which brings AI Learning to our education centers in Lebanon, is one of six solutions selected. Besides the $10,000 prize, for the coming nine months, we will be receiving access to funding in grants and investments, joining a powerful network of impact-minded leaders, receiving coaching and strategic advice from experts, and gaining exposure in the media, among many other benefits. We can’t wait to share more of our journey with you!

New Academic Year, New Hopes

Our centers in Lebanon have been gearing up to welcome students for the 2024-2025 academic year, where, between 10 and 13 September, our annual teachers' training took place. With workshops run by our staff, the training ensures our teachers have the space to share their experiences and best practices to better equip them as educators and improve their performance constantly. We are monitoring the situation in Lebanon closely and will be taking all necessary learning precautions in our centers, whether business as usual or learning from home; we are committed to continuing to provide education for our young refugee learners. Our Scholarships Program team has also been busy welcoming our new university scholars batch, the 49 returning scholars in esteemed institutions such as Cambridge, McGill, and Harvard, and various students pursuing their International Baccalaureate Diplomas with United World Colleges!

Disruptors Wrap Up Incubator Phase

After in-person intensive bootcamps in Amman and Istanbul, 15 startups have been participating in our accredited online incubator over the summer, where they received training from industry experts, 1:1 tailored consultation sessions, and design development services to help support their pitches and have met CEOs from several successful startups. In October, the startups will participate in an internal pitching day to pitch their businesses to a panel of industry experts and Jusoor team members, and those selected will be moving on to the last phase of the Disruptors project, where they will participate in an in-person Demo Day to pitch to a panel of investors and industry experts, competing for seed money prizes!

Jusoor Refugee Program in Engagements

Our Head of Refugee Education, Suha Tutunji, attended a three-day summer school ‘The Industry of Education in Conflict Ethical Practice’ at the Cambridge University Faculty of Education, where discussions were shared on various topics including localization and transitional engagement in education, changing perceptions of societies about refugees, and bridging the gap between practitioners and researchers. The British Academy will be taking the next steps to work on a project on ‘Hearing the Voices of Teachers’ in which Jusoor will be taking part. Suha was also a speaker in an online panel on ‘Innovation Carve-outs: Curating the Space for Innovation.’ The organizers of the event, Brink, provide a space where people can collaborate and experiment to make innovation possible. Suha focused on Azima, our online learning initiative and the role of teachers in the development of the project.

We’re also excited to share with you that we were invited by the Islamic Development Bank to be part of the Skills Training Education Program’s (STEP) steering committee; more on that soon! As we gear up for the new academic year, welcoming new scholars and young learners, we want to thank you for your continued support in helping us bridge the opportunity gap for talented Syrian children and youth around the world!
