Jusoor scholar Sidra Raslan’s story exemplifies the power of networking through how she was able to utilize her network to land her dream job at Hewlett-Packard (HP) after finishing her MA in Environmental, Economic and Social Ecology from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Sidra Raslan’s journey is one of resilience, passion, and a deep commitment to giving back. From her roots in Syria to her current role at HP, Sidra’s story is a testament to the transformative power of education, networking and, community.
Sidra’s journey begins with her name, a name she once disliked but now embraces as a bridge between cultures. “In every language, there’s a meaning for the name Sidra,” she says. This connection to people and cultures has shaped her life, leading her to a career where networking and community building are at the core.
Sidra’s academic journey took an unexpected turn. She initially studied pharmacy, drawn to its scientific and chemical aspects. However, her extensive volunteer work led her to question her career path. “I realized that what I wanted to do full-time was what I was already doing in my free time,” she explains. This realization prompted her to pursue a master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social and Environmental Sustainability at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). The program, which she discovered through Jusoor, allowed her to align her academic background with her passion for social change.
The Power of Networking
Sidra’s career breakthrough came through networking, a skill she honed over years of volunteering and organizing events. While searching for jobs, she reconnected with a woman she had met at a workshop in Switzerland years earlier. This connection led to her current role at HP. “She fought so much for me,” Sidra recalls. “I want to give someone else the opportunity she gave me.” Her story underscores the importance of building and maintaining professional relationships, especially in a globalized world.
Today, Sidra works at HP, a global leader in technology, where she helps channel partners integrate sustainability into their operations. Her role also involves encouraging partners to engage in volunteering and support grassroots organizations worldwide. “I’ve always loved volunteering and community-based work,” Sidra shares. “Now, I’ve turned that passion into my full-time job.”
Sidra’s commitment to social activism began in Syria, where she volunteered on issues ranging from women’s rights to youth development. In 2019, she co-founded an international youth team under the organization Initiatives of Change, which focuses on inner development and youth empowerment.
Through this initiative, Sidra has brought Syrian stories to international platforms, inviting young Syrians to participate in global conferences. “Syrians are always passionate about taking advantage of opportunities,” she notes, reflecting on the high participation rates of Syrians in her events.
Giving Back to Syria
Sidra’s journey is deeply rooted in her Syrian identity. Despite living abroad, she remains committed to giving back to her homeland. “It’s my duty,” she says. Inspired by the concept of giving back 5% of her time to Syrian causes, Sidra is exploring projects that empower Syrian youth and promote sustainability. “Now is the perfect time to do things in Syria,” she says, reflecting on the recent changes in the country. “There’s so much need, and people are willing to help.”
Sidra envisions a future where she can contribute to youth empowerment and sustainability in Syria. She plans to sponsor someone else to pursue a master’s degree, just as Jusoor supported her. “Jusoor changed my life,” she says. “I want to give someone else that opportunity.” Her ultimate goal is to help Syrian youth connect with the world and rebuild their country. “We’re not being looked at as refugees anymore,” she says. “It’s a critical moment to help Syria move forward.”
Sidra Raslan’s story is a testament to the power of education, networking, and perseverance. From her early days as a volunteer in Syria to her current role at HP, she has remained true to her values and committed to making a difference.
