About the Scholarship

Jusoor’s Open-call scholarships are meant to provide small amounts of funding to Syrian students who:

  • Have been offered admission to a university in North America or Europe to pursue a bachelor's or master’s program;
  • Have been awarded a scholarship from their university that covers full tuition, room and board. 
  • Need funds to cover travel to the country of destination and/or have small gaps in personal or academic  expenses.

The maximum amount of funding per student will depend on their scholarship package but it will not exceed $5,000 per year of study. Jusoor reserves the right to award less than $5,000 per year of study and/or to only cover travel from country of residence to the destination country.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must:

  • Be Syrian (including Palestinian with Syrian Travel Document), have lived continuously in Syria prior to the current crisis, and be currently living in Syria or one of its neighboring countries (Lebanon, Jordan, Türkiye , Iraq, Egypt).
  • Demonstrate academic merit by being offered admission and a scholarship for September 2023 by a university in North America or Europe.
  • Not already have the level of degree that they will study.
  • Require financial support to cover travel and/or personal expenses.
  • Show intent to contribute to the redevelopment of Syria.
  • Have a strong record of leadership and community engagement, as demonstrated through volunteer and/or work experience.
  • Be willing to remain engaged with Jusoor’s community.

Funds Coverage

The maximum amount of funding per student will depend on their scholarship package but it will not exceed $5,000 per year of study. Jusoor reserves the right to award less than $5,000 per year of study and/or to only cover travel from country of residence to the destination country. 

Jusoor’s Open-call scholarships are meant to provide small amounts of funding to Syrian students who:

  • Have been awarded a scholarship from their university that covers full tuition, room and board. 
  • Need funds to cover travel to the country of destination and/or have small gaps in personal or academic  expenses.

This scholarship DOES NOT cover any expenses outside of the academic year (i.e. summer expenses such as housing, flights home, etc.). 

This scholarship is contingent on the selected candidates maintaining their scholarships from their universities. If a scholar loses their scholarship from their university for any reason such as academic decline or misconduct, Jusoor will also rescind it’s scholarship.

How to Apply

To apply, kindly fill out this application by May 14th, 2023.

You must upload the following documents with your application, without any exception:

  1. CV
  2. Copy of official ID (passport or national ID card)
  3. Academic Transcripts from your most recent year of study (current grade 12 students may upload their grade 11 transcripts if they do not have a grade 12 one yet)
  4. One recommendation letter from a teacher or professor
  5. One recommendation letter from a volunteer, school club or volunteer supervisor
  6. Letter of admission from the university
  7. Scholarship award letter from the university that details exactly what the scholarship does and does not cover. 

Incomplete applications WILL NOT be considered.

Successful candidates will be required to sign the Jusoor Scholar contract. The main points of the contract are outlined below, and selected scholars can request to read the contract in full before accepting the award. The awardee agrees:

  • To give Jusoor permission to use their name, photographs and biographies on Jusoor’s website, social media and in publications. 
  • To make efforts to attend online and in-person events when requested by Jusoor.
  • To submit a form provided by Jusoor each term to provide academic updates.
  • To agree that to the best of their ability, they will use the knowledge and skills gained through this scholarship to support the development of Syria.
  • To maintain good academic standing.
  • Not to serve as an official representative of any government and not to engage in activities of public nature that are likely to affect Jusoor negatively, while receiving funding from Jusoor.

How many awards will be given?  

 At least 3  awards will be given.

When will I be notified of my status?

Candidates will be notified of the final outcome of their scholarship application by mid-June 2023.

What documents are required for submission?

The following documents are required; there will be no exceptions made and any incomplete applications will be disregarded:

  1. CV
  2. Copy of official ID (passport or national ID card)

If awarded the scholarship, can the funding support my spouse and/or children?

Unfortunately not. The scholarship is intended to support only the scholar. Due to limited resources, Jusoor cannot provide any financial or relocation assistance for your family, including help with visa arrangements.

Do I need to have admission to a university before submitting my application?

Yes, you must have an offer of admission and a full tuition and at least partial living expenses scholarship from the university.

I earned my high school and/or undergraduate degree in Syria. Am I still eligible to apply? 

Yes, absolutely

I earned my undergraduate degree in Syria and am having trouble obtaining my degree documents as proof of attendance/graduation. Can Jusoor help?

Unfortunately not. Through experience in this matter, we have learned Jusoor cannot be of assistance. This issue must be resolved with your university and the Ministry of Education where applicable.

What is the interview process like?

Interviews are conducted by 1-2 Jusoor team members; questions that are asked revolve around themes such as academic and career goals, personal skills and intent to contribute to the redevelopment of Syria. Interviews usually last for about 30 minutes.
